Union Advocate recognized in international Labor Media contest

Members of Teamsters Local 120 picketed the main gate at Marathon’s St. Paul Park refinery on Day 2 of their ULP strike.

The International Labor Communications Association (ILCA) announced winners of its annual Labor Media Awards last month, recognizing outstanding work published in 2021. The Saint Paul Union Advocate received a first-place award for photography and a third-place award for analysis.

ILCA’s awards contest is the largest competition exclusively for labor journalists, drawing thousands of entries that are judged by experts across the industry.

Union Advocate Editor Michael Moore’s photo won first place among entries from local, state and regional publications in the Visual Communications: Best Photograph category. The photo captures daybreak on the picket line outside St. Paul Park’s Marathon refinery on Day 2 of a five-month lockout.

The Advocate won third place among local, state and regional publications in the Writing: Best Analysis category for Moore’s article “Report: Union construction sites draw fewer safety violations,” published in December 2021.

The Union Advocate is the official publication of the Saint Paul Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO.

The Minneapolis Labor Review, official publication of the Minneapolis Labor Federation, won three awards in the contest: second place for Best Photo Gallery, second place for Best Photograph and an honorable mention for Best News Writing.

“In this moment, the labor movement has seized the world’s attention through inspiring organizing campaigns at Starbucks, Amazon, REI, Delta, and more,” said ILCA President Chelsea Connor, director of communications for the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union. “The stories that labor journalists and unions are telling are key components of this newly revitalized movement, and the ILCA Labor Media Awards recognize the important work our members are doing.”

Union Advocate recognized for excellence in labor communications

ILCA-logoThe Union Advocate, official publication of the St. Paul Regional Labor Federation, received five awards in the International Labor Communications Association’s 2015 awards contest.

Competing among print and online publications produced by statewide and other labor organizations in the U.S. and Canada, The Advocate won the following awards:

  • First Place, Visual Communication Awards: Best Informational Graphic, for “Border Battle,” a November 2014 graphic comparing performances of governors in Minnesota and Wisconsin since the 2010 election.
  • First Place, Writing Awards: Saul Miller Awards / Organizing, for “Back to School, Union Strong,” an October 2014 report on historic union drives at two St. Paul charter schools.
  • First Place, Writing Awards: Saul Miller Awards / Political Action, for “Raising Wages for 350,000 Workers,” a May 2014 report on the broad coalition of unions and community groups that successfully lobbied to raise Minnesota’s minimum wage.
  • Third Place, Writing Awards: Best Labor History Story, for “A Model for Disaster,” a May 2014 analysis of NAFTA’s impact on workers locally and nationally over the last 30 years.
  • Third Place, Writing Awards: Best Profile, “Stopping the Presses,” a February 2014 feature story covering workers displaced by the Pioneer Press’ plant closing.

According to ILCA, award winners “represent some of the best and most inspired work in labor communications and are to be congratulated in promoting the highest standards of labor journalism.”

Minnesota-based AFSCME Council 5, the Minneapolis Labor Review newspaper and the University of Minnesota’s Labor Education Service, which publishes the labor-news website Workday Minnesota, also won awards this year. Click here for a list of winners from Minnesota.
