AFSCME members criticized county leaders for scrapping the Detoxification and Withdrawal Management program during a substance-abuse crisis in the community.

Four local unions representing over 2,000 Ramsey County employees are holding firm to their key demands as bargaining with the county inches closer to their contracts’ Dec. 31 expiration date.

The county has become notorious in recent years, Local 8 Vice President Anna Christie said, for “balancing its budget on the backs of its employees.”

“It’s not a clerical mistake; people are actually stealing,” Ramsey County Attorney John Choi said. “And I think this is one of those areas that needs improvement to make sure these cases get the attention of the justice system.”

By showing up in force outside the Ramsey County Courthouse, members of five AFSCME locals persuaded county negotiators to put their proposed wage freeze on ice.
