The fate of a newly opened state agency dedicated to keeping public-sector labor disputes out of court hangs in the balance as Minnesota lawmakers negotiate a new, two-year budget.

“We are all depending on the women doing this work to keep all of our lives going,” home care worker Jacqueline Kelly told the senator. “And what could be more valuable than that?”

Led by the nonprofit St. Paul Labor Studies and Resource Center, local unions helped distribute 2.5 million pounds of free food through the USDA’s Farmers to Families program, which will sunset this month.
