Workers have publicly offered to renegotiate their union contracts with Twin Cities hospitals in an effort to help address staffing shortfalls that, workers warned, are only getting worse.
After voting 97-1 to authorize a strike last week, laundry workers at Aramark’s northeast Minneapolis facility today accepted an improved offer from their employer, roughly doubling the wage increase included in the contract.
“We can’t adequately serve others until we are adequately taken care of,” said Andrew Vanden Broeke, a day treatment therapist who works with children 12 to 17 years old.
“The U is interested in image,” Local 3800 President Cherrene Horazuk said during a rally last month. “U of M AFSCME is interested in substantive change.”
Half the staffing has meant double the work for employees since the chain of booksellers reopened post-pandemic, but workers are pushing back.

“I may not be the one who can bring all the fancy data, but what I am is the only frontline worker with eyewitness testimony,” Mary Turner said. “I’m the one who brings reality.”
